Melasma is abnormal pigmentation (dyspigmentation) of the skin presenting usually as a symmetrical brownish pigmentation, most commonly on the face and more often in females and people with darker skin types.

Topical melasma creams formulated to lighten hyperpigmentation aren’t always safe or effective for all skin types. Additionally, light energy from traditional ablative, fractionated lasers could scatter to unintended surface pigments. That’s why laser skin treatment has been avoided on darker skin due to the risk of post-inflammatory hypo- and hyperpigmentation. But now there’s good news for patients with melasma.

The vascular as well as a pigmentation component needs to be addressed for effective reduction. Unlike other types of devices, the Fotona laser is safe for darker skin types and patients prone to hyperpigmentation as it spares the epidermis (superficial skin layer) and targets the deeper dermal pigment.
